What’s it all about?

There are very few artists that can boast the same level of influence that Miles Davis (1926-1991) has had on music. From Bebop, to cool jazz, to modal jazz, to electric fusion, Miles continually evolved with the times to remain at the creative forefront of modern music. As an apprentice, he learned through Charlie Parker and Dizzie Gillespie; as a bandleader, he led 2 great quintets throughout the 50’s and 60’s, and continued to lead great bands into the 70’s and 80’s. This class is necessary for anyone wanting insight into Miles’ creativity and his amazing musical mind!

What will we cover?

We will be listening to some of his landmark recordings over his lifetime and openly discussing our reactions to them in the context of his life. We’ll also track the development of his playing and improvising style and how it changed to express his artistry. Hope to see you there for what hopefully will be a fascinating class with stimulating discussion!
